Tech Tip – Iso Removal from Pumps & Equipment
Isocyanate reacts with moisture creating hard crystals or scale which in some case may damage or ruin equipment. Removing this dried iso from spray foam equipment is necessary to prevent internal damage or contamination. The removal process can be difficult and a very labor intensive task without the proper tools.
Flat putty knife
1000 grit sandpaper
Set of pics
Safety glasses or full face respirator
Remove part to be cleaned from chemical and wipe dry. Place the needle scaler against the object being cleaned and move back and forth in a sweeping motion. Take care as air born debris, chips and scale can become a hazard if proper PPE is not used. Use dental picks or wire brush to get in to tight areas or around nuts and bolts. Take care not to damage surface areas that require an o-ring seal as needle scaling can damage soft metals or delicate surfaces. Once the hardened material has been removed from the outside surfaces of the part it can be buffed with a wire wheel and polished with sandpaper or Emory cloth. Once the part has been wiped free of dust or debris, a thin coat of Chem Trend foam release may be used for easier cleaning in the future.
As always read, understand and follow all instruction manuals and warning labels supplied with all equipment. Only trained and qualified personnel should perform repairs on the equipment. To access the latest equipment manuals visit www.graco.com.
